Megabonk Complete Beginner's Guide 2024

Welcome to Megabonk! Whether you're a veteran of roguelike games or completely new to the genre, this guide will help you understand everything you need to know to get started.

What is Megabonk?

Megabonk is an action roguelike game where you control a survivor facing endless waves of enemies. Your goal is to survive as long as possible by defeating monsters, collecting experience, and upgrading your character with powerful weapons and items.

Core Gameplay Loop

  • Start a Run - Choose your character and map

  • Fight Enemies - Enemies spawn in waves around you

  • Collect XP Gems - Defeated enemies drop experience gems

  • Level Up - Choose new weapons or upgrade existing ones

  • Survive - Last as long as possible to maximize your score
  • Choosing Your First Character

When starting out, we recommend these beginner-friendly characters:

    Antonio (Starter Character)

    • Passive: +10% damage at the start

    • Starting Weapon: Whip

    • Why Choose: Great all-around stats, forgiving gameplay

    Gennaro

    • Passive: +1 projectile

    • Starting Weapon: Knife

    • Why Choose: Extra projectile makes clearing easier

    Imelda

    • Passive: +10% XP gain

    • Starting Weapon: Magic Wand

    • Why Choose: Faster leveling means more power-ups

    Understanding Weapons

Weapons in Megabonk are divided into categories:

    Active Weapons (Max 6)

    • Deal damage automatically

    • Each can be upgraded to level 8

    • Some can evolve with the right passive item

    Passive Items (Max 6)

    • Provide stat bonuses

    • Required for weapon evolutions

    • Stack multiplicatively with other bonuses

    Weapon Evolution

This is one of the most important mechanics! When you:

  • Max out a weapon to level 8

  • Have the required passive item

  • Open a treasure chest
  • ...your weapon will evolve into a much more powerful form!

    Example Evolutions:

    • Whip + Hollow Heart = Bloody Tear

    • Magic Wand + Empty Tome = Holy Wand

    • Knife + Bracer = Thousand Edge

    Tips for Your First Runs

    Early Game (0-5 minutes)

    • Focus on getting 3-4 different weapons

    • Don't max one weapon immediately

    • Pick up all XP gems - they despawn!

    Mid Game (5-15 minutes)

    • Start focusing on evolution pairs

    • Get defensive items if struggling

    • Watch for elite enemies

    Late Game (15+ minutes)

    • Open chests to trigger evolutions

    • Build synergies between items

    • Consider your escape routes

    Common Beginner Mistakes

  • Ignoring Passive Items - They're essential for evolutions

  • Standing Still - Always keep moving

  • Chasing XP - Let gems come to you when possible

  • Skipping Chests - Chests give gold and trigger evolutions

  • Wrong Item Choices - Check synergies before selecting
