Megabonk Beginner Guide

New to Megabonk? This guide covers everything a new player needs — how the core run loop works, which characters you start with, all 6 maps, how weapons, items and tomes fit together, the easiest unlocks to chase, and the mistakes to avoid. Everything here is from real game data.

How Megabonk works: the core run loop

Megabonk is a roguelike "survivors" game: your character attacks automatically while you focus on moving and dodging. Defeated enemies drop glowing green XP orbs — collect them to level up, and each level lets you choose an upgrade. Stack the right upgrades and your weapons evolve into much stronger forms. Survive the timer (or clear the stage) and you bank progress that unlocks new characters and weapons for your next run.

Who you start as: your first characters

You begin with these characters unlocked from the start. Pick one, learn the loop above, then start chasing unlocks.

The 6 maps & how stage progression works

Megabonk has 6 maps. Forest is the starting stage; the deserts and the Graveyard get tougher. Clearing stage tiers is one of the main ways you unlock new characters and weapons, so working through the maps is real progression, not just scenery.

The six Megabonk maps: Forest, Crusty Desert, Twilight Desert, Scorched Desert, Desert and Graveyard
Forest

A green place full of trees, birds, and great vibes. Also everything will try to kill you.

Crusty Desert

Smells like warm sand.. I fucking hate warm sand.

Twilight Desert

Dry and crusty.... Reminds me of last night.

Scorched Desert

o fuck

Desert

A hot, dry and dusty place.

Graveyard

The home of ghosts and other spooks

See all stages on the maps page.

Weapons vs items vs tomes — what each one does

Three kinds of pickups shape every run, and new players often mix them up:

  • Weapons (31) are your active attacks. Many of them evolve into stronger forms — browse them on the weapons page.
  • Items (86) are passive boosters that come in rarities — see them on the items page.
  • Tomes (26) are run-long upgrades that steer your whole build — browse them on the tomes page.

Item rarities

Higher rarity items are rarer but stronger. The 86 items break down as:

Common: 23Uncommon: 22Rare: 22Epic: 18Quest: 1

The first characters worth unlocking

Good next goals — these characters unlock from straightforward objectives. Each card shows the real in-game requirement.

Every character's unlock is listed in the unlock guide.

Weapon evolutions, explained simply

Evolutions are how a basic weapon becomes a build-defining one. You level a weapon during a run and meet its specific requirement, and it transforms into a stronger evolved form. Because the exact requirement differs per weapon, the best reference is the evolutions page, which lists the real in-game unlock requirement for every weapon — no guesswork. Plan a combination ahead of time in the build simulator.

Beginner tips & common mistakes to avoid

Megabonk beginner tips: survive and dodge, collect XP orbs, level up, evolve your weapon, open chests, explore the map, use merchants, upgrade between runs and learn synergies
  • Don't grab every upgrade. A focused build that pushes one or two weapons toward an evolution beats a pile of unrelated pickups.
  • Keep moving. Your attacks are automatic — your job is positioning and dodging, not standing still to deal damage.
  • Don't ignore tomes. Run-long tome upgrades quietly carry many strong builds.
  • Chase unlocks deliberately. Many characters and weapons unlock from clear objectives — check the unlock guide and aim for one each run.
  • Plan before you play. Test loadouts in the build simulator and weigh options in the compare tool.

Megabonk beginner FAQ

How do you unlock characters in Megabonk?

Most of the 21 characters unlock by completing in-game objectives — clearing a stage tier, leveling a specific weapon, or defeating a boss. Fox and Sir Oofie are available from the very start. See the full unlock guide for every character's exact requirement.

Who are the best starting characters in Megabonk?

Fox and Sir Oofie are the two characters you have from the beginning, so they're where every new player starts. Pick either one, learn the core loop, then work toward unlocking the rest.

How many characters, weapons, items and tomes are in Megabonk?

As of game version v1.0.64 there are 21 characters, 31 weapons, 86 items and 26 tomes, plus 6 maps. You can browse them all in the database.

How do weapon evolutions work?

Weapons evolve into stronger forms once you level them up and meet a specific in-game requirement (often tied to using a weapon or pairing it with the right item). The evolutions page lists the real unlock requirement for every weapon.

What's the difference between weapons, items and tomes?

Weapons are your active attacks and many of them evolve. Items are passive boosters that come in rarities (Common, Uncommon, Rare, Epic). Tomes are run-long upgrades that shape your whole build. You combine all three each run.

Which map should beginners play first?

Forest is the starting map and the friendliest place to learn the basics before you move on to the harder desert stages and the Graveyard. Clearing stages is also how you unlock more characters and weapons.

What platform is Megabonk on?

Megabonk is a PC game available on Steam. There is no mobile or console version at the time of writing.
